Hydraulics of Granular Avalanches

How does an avalanche flow and what is the role of fluctuations in velocity and forces on the flow dynamics? In this PhD project, the student will use novel experimental techniques, using photoelasticity and high-speed imagery, and physical modelling to explore the rheological behaviour of laboratory avalanches. Using simplified dynamical models of avalanche flows, we aim to motivate improved construction of safety barriers and other mechanisms to deflect the flow.
